IMAS Lunchtime Talk Series: Evaluating Managers’ Actual Performance in a Difficult and Changing Environment

IMAS Lunchtime Talk Series: Evaluating Managers’ Actual Performance in a Difficult and Changing Environment

10 Sep 2012

Evaluating performance is an essential but difficult step in portfolio management. The many market challenges today has raised several questions, such as “To what do we attribute the gains and/or losses we experienced? Was it market failure or underperformance of the manager?” Without satisfactory answers, these lingering questions can create significant ‘performance anxiety’ for investors.

In this Talk, Dr Peter Hopkins, a Principal of Style Research, will explore the following topics, so that we can better understand how managers’ actual performance can be evaluated in this difficult and changing environment:

  • Painful but instructive lessons from 2011
  • How and where do managers outperform?
  • Is there evidence of systematic skill?
  • Forecasting styles and selecting managers to outperform in 2012
