INTRODUCTION

The CAIA.nxt Fundamentals of Alternative Investments Certificate provides learners with a practical foundation in alternative investments and their role in diversified portfolios. The programme is designed to bridge a key knowledge gap for professionals who need to understand private markets, hedge funds, real assets, credit strategies and other alternative investment strategies in a client or portfolio context.

Delivered through IMAS iLearn, this programme is suitable for professionals in wealth management, client advisory, investment management, product, sales and marketing, as well as those seeking a structured introduction to alternative investments.

This is a 15-hours eLearning training programme that can be taken at your own time and pace.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the programme, learners should be able to:

1. Understand the key characteristics of alternative investments and how they differ from traditional asset classes.

2. Identify major alternative investment categories and sub-strategies, including private equity, private credit, real assets, hedge fund strategies and diversifying strategies.

3. Explain common risk, return, liquidity and implementation considerations associated with alternative investments.

4. Understand different fund structures, including illiquid, semi-liquid and liquid vehicles.

5. Apply alternative investment concepts in the context of client goals, portfolio construction and diversification.

6. Understand how alternative investments may be integrated into institutional or wealth management portfolios.

7. Communicate key considerations, risks and expectations to clients more effectively.

The programme includes eight modules grouped into three distinct categories:

FOUNDATIONS  

Delve into the fundamental aspects of alternative investments. From understanding the basics to navigating risk and return considerations, this category establishes the groundwork for a solid comprehension of various alternative investment strategies.

- Module 2: Risk and Return of Alternative Investments  
- Module 3: Accessing Alternative Investments  

STRATEGY INTRODUCTIONS  

Explore alternative investments categorized into four risk and return groups. Each module introduces multiple sub-strategies, shedding light on their characteristics, objectives, risks, and performance. This category offers a deeper insight into specific strategies and their role in portfolio diversification.  

- Module 4: Equity Strategies  
- Module 5: Credit Strategies  
- Module 6: Real Assets Strategies  
- Module 7: Diversifying Strategies  

PORTFOLIO APPLICATIONS  

This category focuses entirely on the practical application of alternative investments. It covers asset allocation, portfolio construction methods, managing liquidity, operational considerations, and client communication.  

- Module 8: Portfolio Implementation  

A certificate of completion will be issued by CAIA upon the completion of the program.
