Sustainable investing can provide a win win solution – by generating good long-term returns while driving positive environmental and social impact. More asset owners and investors are increasingly expecting their fund managers to integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors into their portfolio management and investment decisions; as well as practise good corporate stewardship.

Singapore is establishing itself to be a global financial centre with a strong sustainability focus, with initiatives launched across our asset management, banking, capital markets and insurance. This year, the Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS) issued a public statement endorsing its commitment to sustainability considerations, and expressing support for global and local standards such as the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), and the Singapore Stewardship Principles for Responsible Investors (SSP) in April 2017. Key Singapore asset owners such as MAS, GIC and Temasek also integrate sustainability considerations into their investment processes, which aim to deliver good long-term returns. In banking, the Association of Banks in Singapore has launched industry guidelines on responsible financing in 2015; and implemented a haze diagnostic toolkit in 2017 to factor in haze related risks (e.g. such as no open burning on plantations, and build capacity on fire prevention with local communities) as part of loan underwriting decisions. In the capital markets, the Singapore Exchange (SGX) introduced a new “comply or explain” sustainability reporting requirement and signed up on Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (SSE) as a partner exchange in 2016.
In collaboration with WWF, IMAS is organising a series of workshops which will see international investors and sustainability experts discuss the business case for ESG integration and how it can boost the Singapore fund management industry. These workshops are supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), as part of broader capacity building efforts to understand and implement relevant ESG systems, processes and standards in the financial sector.
